Sound2Summit Brewery in Snohomish WA Brings Home a Silver Medal at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival® Competition, held annually in Denver Colorado.

Medals presented during the Great American Beer Festival competition are globally acknowledged as emblems of brewing excellence and remain among the most sought-after accolades within the brewing community. In the 2023 competition, top-tier brews spanning 99 beer categories across 175 different beer styles (including all subcategories) received prestigious gold, silver, and bronze medals. These coveted awards were unveiled during an intimate ceremony held at the Bellco Theatre in Denver on Saturday, September 23, 2023, as part of the Great American Beer Festival.

Over 9,200 beers from 2,033 breweries were entered in the competition this year. In a field of so many beers, winning is not easy, especially in some of the more popular categories, like Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale (365 entries), West Coast-Style India Pale Ale (301 entries), and German-Style Pilsener (228 entries).

Here are some quick facts about the 2023 edition of the GABF:

  • This year, 11 Washington breweries won 14 medals with the following breweries winning two medals each: Cloudburst Brewing, Ghostfish Brewing, and Kulshan Brewing.  Congratulations to all Washington Breweries that won - that is a big accomplishment.
  • There were 303 medals awarded to 263 breweries.
  • Beers were judged in 99 beer categories across 175 beer styles (including all subcategories).
  • The competition took place in three phases over nine days and was judged by 250 beer experts from 10 countries, including the U.S.
  • In all, 9,298 beers were entered in the competition — from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

In Category 69: American Amber/Red Ale – out of 130 Entries, Sound2Summit Brewery was recognized with a Silver Medal for Night Sky Red, a beautiful, amber colored beer with a thick head of foam, Night Sky Red Ale gets its name from the old sailing adage, “red sky at night, sailor’s delight.” This beer is nicely balanced with a robust malt character accented by wheat, munich, and dark crystal malts, and an evergreen hop presence. It is like drinking a sip of the Northwest.  Sound2Summit Brewery is a 500+ barrel brewery located in Snohomish WA that prides itself in brewing beer that is true to style.

This is not the first time Night Sky Red has been recognized as one of the top Amber Ales.  In 2022, this beer also received a silver medal at the US Open Beer Championship, and a Gold Medal at the Washington Brewers.

"We are incredibly proud to have received this recognition from GABF.  This demonstrates our commitment to brew quality beer for our customers and really demonstrates the process that our head-brewer, Mr. Adam Frantz, demonstrates across all of our beers" said Doug Milnor, Co-Owner of Sound2Summit Brewery. "We are really proud of Adam and his commitment to S2S and his craft".

The Great American Beer Festival is possible in part thanks to a Professional Judge Panel comprising of 250 judges from around the world, as well as more than 300 volunteers. Throughout three phases over nine days, 9,200+ entries were evaluated from 2,033 breweries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

"The Great American Beer Festival competition serves as a platform for the finest brews from around the world to undergo rigorous scrutiny to earn the title of ‘the best of the best,’” remarked Chris Williams, competition director of the Great American Beer Festival. "The beer community's unwavering commitment to pushing the frontiers of innovation and quality is truly commendable. The Brewers Association takes great pride in recognizing the achievements of this year's victors."
